Restoring a medieval garden wall


It's been about 8 years since we bought the rundown medieval chateau of La Celle-Guenand and started to transform the castle into a modern day working bed and breakfast that happens to have caves, underground tunnels, and a wonderful garden.

Our latest project has been restoring the medieval garden wall...

Our expert mason, Ian Hulatt and some very kind volunteers have been busy.

As you can see in the photos, the wall not only required restoration, but in parts, complete reconstruction.

The wall was partly collapsed in places and had succumbed to damage from ivy and other plants and trees.

One side of the wall is approximately 90m long and 4m high.

The wall is made of tuffeau stone which was quarried from the caves beneath the orchard.

In the photo below, you can see an original wall door opening. Note the level of the garden was about 1m below the current soil level.
